Spas have long been prized for their health benefits. The Victorians started using them as bathing became more fashionable (and body odour less so). Back in 1868 when Crieff Hydro opened as one of the first hydropathic health spa hotels in Scotland, bathing in ice-cold water was the done thing, thought to boost circulation and soothe aching muscles.

These days, the Crieff Hydro pool is comfortably warm and our guests prefer building up a sweat in our sauna to shivering in a bath of icy water. We don’t blame them! However, a spot of time spent in the sauna can still do wonders for your health:

1) Getting rid of toxins

Pollution, alcohol, smoking and a bad diet can clog your body up with toxins. Toxins can cause a huge range of problems, from spots and colds to headaches and even mild infections.

Saunas raise your body temperature, making you sweat and boosting your lymphatic system which helps expel those nasty toxins from your body. You’re left feeling lighter and totally energised.

2) Natural healing

Exposure to the high heat of a sauna creates an artificial fever state in the human body. This may sound scary, but fever is actually part of the body’s natural healing process and pumps your body full of disease-fighting white blood cells and antibodies.

3) They make you happy

When your body starts to get very hot, it reacts by releasing endorphins. These are nature’s painkillers which give you a happy buzz.

4) You’ll sleep like a baby

If you have trouble sleeping, it may be because your body temperature isn’t dropping enough at bedtime. Raising your body temperature in the early evening by exercising or using a sauna encourages it to fall later at night, lulling you into a perfectly sleepy state.
