Summer fun at Loch Earn: A Guide

Have some fun on Loch Earn this summer

Take advantage of the new Breadalbane Explorer bus link from Crieff Hydro, and explore Loch Earn and the surrounding area this summer. There are dozens of exciting activities, fascinating heritage sites, and spectaular natural landmarks to investigate, ensuring there is never danger of a dull day, although you just might struggle to fit it all in! Here are just a few points/places of interest to get you started. We’ll be back with anotehr instalment shortly.

Water Activities

At Crieff Hydro, we offer a wide range of water-based activities that take you out on Loch Earn to test your mettle while you make a splash in one of the most picturesque bodies of water in Scotland. There’s Water-skiing, Wakeboarding, and Tornado tubing. Our expert activities staff cater for all ages and skill levels so we’re fully-equipped to help you get the adrenaline pumping. There are few places of such vast natural beauty in which to experience something as thrilling and daring as the extreme water sports on offer at The Hydro – you don’t want to miss this!

Hill Walking

If getting out on the water isn’t your thing, perhaps a day out on firmer footing will be more appealing. If that’s the case then you’re in luck to say the least. The spectacular Ben Vorlich is a Munro located in an area of land bounded to the north by Loch Earn, and to the west by Loch Lubnaig. Ben Vorlich is most frequently climbed from Ardvorlich to the north. A path leads up Glen Vorlich, and then heads for the mountain’s northern ridge – the summit lies 4 km from Ardvorlich.

Many walkers then continue on to the neighbouring hill, Stùc a’ Chroin, by way of Ben Vorlich’s south west ridge. Return to Ardvorlich can be made without re-ascending Ben Vorlich, as a path leads from between the two hills round Ben Vorlich’s northwestern slope to meet the main ascent path. It’s also interesting to note that the boundary between the council areas of Perth and Kinross and Stirling passes through it’s summit.

Edinample Falls/Castle

Then there’s Edinample Falls, a naturally-constructed water feature which makes for a spectacular sight if you fancy a romantic walk in the area. It’s fairly easy to get to from a stop at Lochearnhead and well worth a look if you’re already walking in the area.

Nearby Edinample Castle itself is a sight to behold and is a must for Scottish history lovers and curious visitors alike. The Castle has several legends attached to it dating back several centuries,  the best-known is that ‘Black’ Duncan Campbell, a man known for his fury and his ornery nature, had asked the architect to build the castle with a parapet, but on discovering that there was not one threw the hapless architect off the roof to his death. His ghost is said to haunt the castle, wandering around the roof where the parapet should have been.

These are just a few of the exciting activities you can undertake and places you can visit during your stay at Crieff Hydro with the Breadalbane Explorer. For more information, please feel free to call us on 01764 651 670.

Crieff Highland Games rev into action this summer

Crieff will be welcoming the annual Crieff Highland Games on 19th August 2012,; a perfect opportunity to come and visit Crieff Hydro this summer.

The Games began in 1820 to revive the Tartan and Highland Culture encouraged by Sir Walter Scott and has since been an annual gathering for all the family,  and has proven popular with both locals and visitors from around the world.

The competitions held within the Highland Games have not changed much over the years and still include traditional events such as shot putt, highland dancing, and tug-o-war. The special attraction of the 2012 Games however, will be the Bolddog Lings Motocross Display Team.

The Bolddog Lings wow crowds with aerial acrobatics and feature the UK’s top ranked freestyle motocross riders performing eye-popping tricks that are usually only seen on TV.  The day will begin at 10.30am, leaving enough time to grab a quick breakfast at the Crieff Hydro Restaurant before heading down the event.

Crieff Highland Gathering Chairman, David Gillies, said; “We are delighted to be able to welcome the Bolddog Lings back to Crieff.  For many people, particularly those with families, the special attraction is one of the highlights of Crieff Highland Gathering, and they don’t come much more spectacular than the Bolddog Lings.”

The Crieff Highland Gathering has been known to attract its fair share of special guests in the past too with Crieff-born Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor even taking part when he was made chieftain of the games in 2001. Ewan grew up in Crieff and has spoken publicly about his love of his Perthshire hometown.

With a range of events, competitions, trade stands and a fun fair there is something for all the family at the Highland Games. So gather your friends and family and book a stay in Crieff Hydro’s luxury 5 star self catering lodges or 3 star chalets where you will be able to take part in your own Mini Highland Games.
