Fine Dining for all the family at Crieff Hydro

The Meikle – just one of many great places to eat and drink during your stay at Crieff Hydro

At Crieff Hydro you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to fine dining and refreshments; whether it be a casual drink, a light lunch, a romantic meal for two or top quality dining for all the family. We pride ourselves on being able to cater for all occasions, providing the finest quality produce and top level customer service every time to see to it that you enjoy a truly relaxing and rewarding stay with us.

To help you get a little more familiar with our many fantastic on-site eateries/restaurants, here is a run down of what’s on offer at Crieff Hydro.

The Meikle

You’ll know it from the warm welcome when you arrive – this is a culinary experience the whole family will love.

Yes, the setting is grand and spacious, but the atmosphere is bustling. Booking a table at The Meikle restaurant is also a good excuse to dress up for the evening. Smart casual is the order of the day but you’ll also feel at home dressed a little more formally. It’s your choice.

We should also mention the Meikle Bar – complete with grand piano and outragously comfortable chairs – is the perfect place for an aperitif, digestif – or a tour of Scotland courtesy of our whisky wall.

The Brasserie

Pop in for a spot of pasta and chat at lunchtime. Book a table for a precision-grilled, locally-reared steak in the evening. Or feed your soul with the ultimate all-day Scottish breakfast. It’s a quality Scottish restaurant that caters for everyone.

Of course, if you’re under 12, the Brasserie is where you’ll feast on your favourites at our famous children’s high tea. That means tasty food for you, before heading off to BIG Country while mum and dad do their own thing for dinner.

But don’t get the wrong idea. Lot’s of families choose to have their evening meals together in The Brasserie – it’s the exact opposite of the kind of stuffy, overly-formal restaurant parents and children dread. Then again, that’ll be obvious from the second you walk in.

The Clubhouse

The Clubhouse is our family (and dog) friendly spot for lunch, dinner or simply a light snack. You can even nip in for breakfast – ideal if you’re staying in our self catering accommodation at Culcrieff.

Yes, you’ll have spectacular views of our golf course (or the crazy golf if that’s more your thing). But plus fours and plaid are very much optional extras. It’s a restaurant, not a gentleman’s club, so dress codes and club rules have no place amongst the pub lunch classics, beers, wines and ice cream cones.

And yes – your faithful friend is welcome too. In fact, you’ll often see grateful dogs outside lapping from bowls of fresh water – while the rest of the family breathe in the fresh Perthshire air.

The Winter Garden
It’s a grand old room (with a suitably grand name). But the food and drink is refreshingly simple and hearty – just what you’d expect from a quality Scottish restaurant.

In the morning, it’s the perfect sunny spot to soak up the newspapers over a pot of tea. Lunch sees hungry kids fill up on packed lunches, while mum and dad choose from homemade soups, sandwiches and salads.

It’s also a place to take a spot of afternoon tea. It’s also great for stocking up on refreshments after a burl around the ballroom during our legendary Ceilidhs.

The Hub

Whether you’re picking up the kids at BIG Country or refuelling after testing out the sports facilities in Melville Hall, The Hub is a great choice.

There’s plenty of healthy food on offer, like spicy soups, classic Paninis and filled Ciabattas. But amongst the righteous salads and guilt-free smoothies, we’ve managed to find space for an ice cream cart – complete with every topping known to childkind.

Music and sport play a big part in a day at The Hub – you can catch the latest music videos on the big screen, or see the big game in a family-friendly setting. We’re fully licensed too – so you can enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine while you’re soaking up the action.

Get a bird’s eye view with Seaplane training in Crieff

During your stay at Crieff Hydro Hotel, viewing the beautiful scenery around nearby Loch Earn is spectacular enough from the ground, but spying the dramatic peaks and lush, sloping woodland from your own Seaplane is something else entirely.

Caledonian Seaplanes offer you the chance to do just that. For hobby-ing or commercial pilots looking for an extra thrill, the onsite Seaplane training with Caledonian Seaplanes offers intensive training days aiming to get you up in the air with little fuss so you can experience the thrill and total freedom of seaplane flying for a minimum of five hours flight time, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can incorporate a bit of mountain flying for a truly unforgettable scenic experience in the Perthshire Sky.

The seaplane training sessions with Caledonian Seaplanes require pilots with either a Private Pilot License (PPL) or Commercial Pilot License (CPL). However, if you would like to make this a group trip, there are plenty of things to do and places to visit in the local area to occupy any non-pilots in the party. There are distillery tours, beautiful walks, golf courses, water-sports, horse riding, heritage sites… the list could go on and on!

Southern Fried Music Festival back in Perth for another taste of Americana

Perth’s popular Southern Fried Festival returns next month

Perth will get a taste of Americana next month with the return of Southern Fried; the city’s annual celebration of country, blues, R&B and soul. If you’re a lover of good music and fancy making the most of your stay at Crieff Hydro next month, you won’t want to miss out on this small but colourful salute to some of the most important genres, developments and influences in modern musical history – with a jam-packed programme of events from tributes to the lives and work of Johnny Cash and Gram Parsons, to fresh new talent such as Anais Mitchell and Lera Lynn.

Now in its fifth year, Southern Fried has become a fantastic draw for local fans and visiting appreciators of American roots music and this year’s festival is sure to be just as busy as ever. The festival takes place in four different venues throughout Perth city centre – Perth Concert Hall, Perth Theatre,  Twa Tams and Greyfriars Bar – across four days. Southern Fried kicks off this year on Thursday July 26 with a FREE launch party concert at Twa Tams with a Scottish double bill featuring the first ever live appearance of songwriter,  Dean Owens’ band Deer Lake and Scottish  The Sunshine Delay . The music then continues throughout Friday and Saturday, all day, ending on Sunday July 29.

The Johnny Cash: Songwriter event on Friday night is sure to be one of the biggest pulls in the program, bringing together some of the top names on the weekend’s bill to celebrate the songs and swagger of the Man in Black himself, while Soul Explosion! brings together two incendiary acts in one pulsating package. Nashville’s finest, The Dynamites take to the stage with the legendary Charles Walker, and they’re  joined on the bill by the wonderful Niki King and her big funky Edinburgh-based soul combo, The Elements. If you like it funky, soulful and authentic, this is one not to be missed.

According to the Southern Fried website: “Charles Walker doesn’t imitate, emulate or try to resuscitate a bygone era. He is soul; the real deal, still carrying the flaming torch that burst into flame back in the 60’s at the Apollo Theater where he opened for icons like James Brown, Etta James, Jackie Wilson and Wilson Pickett.

Some events are free, although you can also save money on full price events with a festival pass which allows you access to every event across the weekend for £75.50, saving festival goers up to 30%. Tickets for individual events can be bought too. Authentic Southern Soul Food will also be lovingly served up every day in the Glassrooms restaurant in Perth Concert Hall  to help you get a real taste of Southern American culture in a small-scale Scottish setting.

Make a real weekend of it by taking advantage of our special summer offers and book a stay at Crieff Hydro. Or for more information, call us on 01764 651 670.

Crieff Highland Games rev into action this summer

Crieff will be welcoming the annual Crieff Highland Games on 19th August 2012,; a perfect opportunity to come and visit Crieff Hydro this summer.

The Games began in 1820 to revive the Tartan and Highland Culture encouraged by Sir Walter Scott and has since been an annual gathering for all the family,  and has proven popular with both locals and visitors from around the world.

The competitions held within the Highland Games have not changed much over the years and still include traditional events such as shot putt, highland dancing, and tug-o-war. The special attraction of the 2012 Games however, will be the Bolddog Lings Motocross Display Team.

The Bolddog Lings wow crowds with aerial acrobatics and feature the UK’s top ranked freestyle motocross riders performing eye-popping tricks that are usually only seen on TV.  The day will begin at 10.30am, leaving enough time to grab a quick breakfast at the Crieff Hydro Restaurant before heading down the event.

Crieff Highland Gathering Chairman, David Gillies, said; “We are delighted to be able to welcome the Bolddog Lings back to Crieff.  For many people, particularly those with families, the special attraction is one of the highlights of Crieff Highland Gathering, and they don’t come much more spectacular than the Bolddog Lings.”

The Crieff Highland Gathering has been known to attract its fair share of special guests in the past too with Crieff-born Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor even taking part when he was made chieftain of the games in 2001. Ewan grew up in Crieff and has spoken publicly about his love of his Perthshire hometown.

With a range of events, competitions, trade stands and a fun fair there is something for all the family at the Highland Games. So gather your friends and family and book a stay in Crieff Hydro’s luxury 5 star self catering lodges or 3 star chalets where you will be able to take part in your own Mini Highland Games.

We are excited to announce that Crieff Hydro Hotel has been nominated as a regional finalist for this year’s Good Spa Guide Awards. To vote for Crieff Hydro, please head over to the Good Spa Guide site and put in a good word!

Our Spa facilities are just one of the many features we pride ourselves on here and we are ecstatic to be given recognition in these prestigious awards. Whether it’s a massage, a luxurious pedicure or simply a dip in the pool you’re after, Crieff Hydro is specially-built to help you relax and unwind, all within in 900-acres of lush Perthshire scenery.

The Victorian Spa pool may have changed somewhat since its debut as an ice-cold Hydropathic health attraction, but this luxury, fully-heated adults-only spa is a fantastic venue in which to kick back and treat yourself as you truly deserve! Take a swim in the heated pool beneath the glorious ceiling paintings (best viewed while doing backstroke) then rid any aches and pains in the sauna, steam room or spa bath. Challenge Yourself and Climb Ben Ledi This Summer

Calling all hill walkers!

Visit Crieff Hydro this summer and challenge yourself with a walk up Ben Ledi. Standing at 879m high, Ben Ledi is classified as a Corbett and is the highest peak in the Trossachs; a rewarding climb for veteran hillwalkers and courageous beginners alike.

A short drive from Crieff Hydro to the Trossachs will bring you to Ben Ledi which, when translated into Gaelic, means ‘hill of the long shoulder’. Positioned on the edge of the highlands and known for its excellent view points, it is a favourite with hill walkers with well walked paths. Be sure to bring your wellies though as there are some boggy parts.

Along the walk you will catch breath-taking views of Callander and you may even be able to spot Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle in the distance. Some say Ben Ledi has the most romantic scenery in the Highlands and with an impressive waterfall to view along the walk you will see why.

When the walk is finished, head back to Crieff Hydro and take advantage of the adults only Victorian Spa – ‘the most relaxing place on the resort’ or pamper yourself in the salon with a wide range of treatments to help relax after your climb.
